What can you expect?

In this course we will first look at the important aspects on how to develop an illustration. From here we enter the world of watercolour! You can expect: colour mixing, water control, adding details and how to get vibrant finished work.

Having personal contact with students is a key aspect to all of my workshops & creative events. This is why, even though this course is online, I have set it up in such a way that you can have feedback as well as ask any questions you might have.

Course set up:

Fire Up your Skills videos: On the 26th of April the course goes live, and for a whole 6 weeks, you will have access to pre-recorded videos as well as PDF handouts where I will guide you step-by-step in the following subjects:

  • Developing your illustration - a good foundation for sketching, drawing and how to get you ideas on paper is key. We go into composition, “world” development and storytelling.

  • Watercolour Warm-up - Let’s go back to basics on how to mix colours, basic techniques and handy tips.

  • Watercolour Next Level - Now let’s get ready to improve your water control, layers, interesting effects and adding details.

These short videos will be a combination of exercises, information and demos that you can re-watch and try out at any time.

Live Demo Together: On Thursday 29th of April, we will have a ‘live’ painting session, where I will paint a watercolour illustration while you watch live (via zoom). During this session I will explain my process and I will also encourage you to ask questions. If you are familiar with my instagram lives, then imagine a live specially for you! We end with a Q&A session. This session will be recorded so you can also re-watch it.

Work Your Piece You should be fired up now to work on your own piece! You have two weeks to develop your illustration and paint it. You will have a specific deadlien to send in your work so I can give you your personal feedback at the end of the course.

Live Final Q&A: On Thursday 13th of May, we meet again, to show our work in progress and have a final opportunity to answer your questions or do a small demo.

Live Zoom dates: 29th of April & 13th of May!

A little more about me

I’ve been a freelance illustrator for over 7 years, working for various types of companies bringing their concepts and ideas to life. In a nutshell, visual storytelling is what I do.

Since 3 years I’ve been giving creative workshops, first as part of a local workshop space “Paper Brush Studio” and since a year ago back to ‘solo’. I love to encourage others to be creative and fall in love with their own work.

When I create a new workshop or course, I always try to think about what would have made me happy, or pushed me further, when I was starting out. And this keeps me motivated to give participants, you, all of my energy.

My illustration work is known for being colourful, personal, fun, and conveying emotions. These characteristics are the ones I will bring to the table during this course, and I hope that by opening the door to my ‘world’ it can inspire you to develop yours!

Other things about me: I’m a sketchbook fanatic, I love nature and animals. My dog Tjido and I have amazing adventures with the bakfiets and good food makes the world a better place.

More testimonials:

I really loved the course, it was fun and you made it easier for me to work with watercolours. Aafke gives very good instructions how to improve. It's a diverse course with a lot of possibilities to ask questions. Thank you so much!

I learned a lot of new tips from Aafke and I feel that the course pushed me to stretch my skills. It left me very motivated to keep creating on my own!
